Geoff Keighley kicked off Summer Game Fest with the annual opening showcase, with this also being the first in-person event. There was quite a bit of games shown, so let's jump into the highlights.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Easily the biggest reveal of the show and also the final reveal, we finally got a great look at Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the sequel to 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake. After escaping Midgar, Cloud and his friends will journey across Gaia to find Sephiroth.
The trailer gave us a great look at gameplay and how it has evolved from its predecessor. Also, it seems Yuffie and Red XIII will be joining the party full-time along with the return of Aerith, Barret, and Tifa. It seems we will be taking quite a jump in size compared to the size of Midgar in Remake, with lots of new grounds and areas to explore.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is slated for an early 2024 release exclusively on PlayStation 5 and will launch on two discs.
Mortal Kombat 1
Just a couple of weeks after its reveal, we got a great look at Mortal Kombat 1's gameplay. The gameplay showed off kombat, fatalities, kombos, and even the new Kameo fighter system. Below are some shots from this gameplay.
Mortal Kombat 1 is set for release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch on September 19.
Spider-Man 2
While we didn't get any new gameplay, Insomniac brought some news on the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 2. We got a look at the box art for the game and some elegant concept art. During the interview, it was confirmed that Venom will not be Eddie Brock, and instead be a secret reveal for players.
The final announcement was the release date. Spider-Man 2 will be releasing on October 20 exclusively for PlayStation 5.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
Speaking of co-op, the sequel to the cult-classic Space Marine game will be featuring three-player co-op. We got a great look at the game with tons of footage and combat showing off how the game has evolved from its predecessor. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is set to launch in Winter 2023.
Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
The iconic video game franchise is back with an all-new title. The game looks like a return to the original 2D titles with a Metroidvania spin.
