E3 2023 Canceled
After a week of publishers like Ubisoft and Sega pulling out, and rumors of discourse, the ESA confirmed that E3 2023 has been canceled. IGN was the first to get the scoop.
"This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3."
- Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of Gaming, ReedPop
The writing on the wall for E3 has been pretty clear since the pandemic. After the major data leaks in 2019, PlayStation no longer attending, and publishers feeling more comfortable with their own Nintendo Direct-esque presentations, E3 has been having trouble trying to prove its purpose. This would have been the first in-person event since E3 2019, and the ESA and ReedPop said they will continue to work on continuing E3, in some form, in the future.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay Presentation
After years of anticipation, we finally got a deep dive of "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" gameplay. Series producer, Eiji Aonuma, opened up the presentation and gave us a look at some of the new mechanics. Recall will allow Link to rewind certain objects in time, Fuse lets Link combine weapons and objects together to create a variety of new weapons, Ultrahand, which allows Link to connect objects in the world to make fully-functioning vehicles, and finally Ascend which gives Link the ability to phase through objects above him.
The Legend of Zelda:: Tears of the Kingdom is set to release for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.
Resident Evil 4 Sells 3 Million Copies
Just only released last week, the remake of Resident Evil 4 has already sold an outstanding 3 million copies, bringing the series' sales total to over 135 million. Resident Evil 4 currently has a 93 on Metacritic and has helped set itself as a game of the year candidate, worthy of living up to the original's acclaim.
April Fools' Events in Gaming
With today being April Fools', many studios have decided to take part in the festivities. Here are some of my favorites:
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog has died (but not really). Amy is having a murder mystery party for her birthday and Sonic is the victim. Players must solve the mystery and interact with the iconic cast of Sonic characters. You can download the game on Steam here.
Among Us Horse Wrangling Mode
The crewmates have been transformed into horses. Available till April 2nd, players can play in the new hide & seek mode, Horse Wrangling, and classic mode, Classic Horse Mode, and experience Among Us in a true cowboy way.
Overwatch Temporary Patch
Along with bringing back the iconic April Fools' Googly Eyes, Blizzard has also brought a "unique" temporary patch. The new limited-time arcade mode gives players the chance to experience all the greatness of this temporary patch. Some changes include Mercy now having 125 rounds in her gun, Genji healing himself when he feels like it, Reinhardt being able to fly, and Winston can now "Winston!". You can read the full patch notes here, and see the changes for yourself in-game.
